As an English translation checker, I work with Tomedes' team ensuring businesses can successfully expand into global markets by making sure their content is polished, clear, and culturally relevant.
Recently, I took on a project to evaluate AI-powered tools for translating Arabic e-commerce content into English. This task included product descriptions, website navigation, and marketing materials—critical elements for any online store targeting English-speaking audiences.
With Arabic e-commerce on the rise, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, the demand for high-quality translations is greater than ever. But can AI tools deliver the clarity, accuracy, and cultural nuance required? I put a selection of Tomedes tools to the test, and here’s what I discovered.
The success of Arabic e-commerce platforms in English-speaking markets relies on more than word-for-word translations. Businesses must prioritize precision, cultural adaptation, and clarity to engage global audiences effectively. English-speaking shoppers expect clear, engaging product descriptions, category menus, and marketing materials—any confusion can quickly turn them away.
Maintaining brand identity is equally vital. Arabic businesses bring unique cultural values that need thoughtful adaptation to resonate without losing their essence. Accurate translations not only build trust but also set brands apart in competitive markets.
SEO benefits further amplify this success. Properly optimized translations help websites rank higher and attract the right audience through keywords like “Arabic to English e-commerce translation” and “product descriptions translation.”
AI tools streamline this process, offering faster, scalable, and accurate results. By combining technology with cultural sensitivity, businesses can confidently expand into English-speaking markets and drive growth.
While examining the translated content, I was able to get some insights from the project managers and translators who worked on the project. I asked them what are the challenges they encountered in translating Arabic e-commerce content:
1. Language Nuances: Arabic has formal and colloquial variations, which can affect translations. For example, some terms that work well in formal Arabic might sound stiff or awkward in English.
2. Cultural Adaptation: Certain idioms, phrases, or marketing messages require localization, not just translation. For instance, a phrase that resonates with Middle Eastern audiences may need to be reworded to appeal to English-speaking buyers.
3. SEO Optimization: Balancing accurate translation with the inclusion of relevant keywords (e.g., “Arabic e-commerce SEO” and “title tags for Arabic websites”) is essential for search engine performance.
4. Product-Specific Terms: Technical jargon for electronics, fashion, or cosmetics can be tricky. Tools like the Key Terms Glossary helped maintain consistency here.
Despite these challenges, AI tools combined with human oversight proved to be a strong solution for tackling these issues.
I received the original source text and its translation and needed to identify key concerns and important terms for consideration. To achieve this, I first processed and analyzed the content using the Tomedes Pre-Translation Toolkit, as demonstrated below:
Explore this sample pre-translation analysis and discover our platform's features for free by clicking here. Using this tool, I generated a list of key terms critical for accurate translations when processed through our AI-powered Machine Translation aggregator.
For instance, the tool identified "العود" (Oud) as a key term. Oud refers to a fragrant oil derived from Agarwood, but it holds deep cultural significance in the Middle East. Translating it literally as "Agarwood oil extract" would fail to capture its meaning for the target audience.
In this case, for an e-commerce business catering to fragrance enthusiasts interested in traditional Middle Eastern perfumes, it’s essential to retain the term "Oud" in the English translation. This approach ensures cultural relevance and resonates better with the audience who are already familiar with the term.
Another key feature that helped me grasp the complexity of this translation project was the Pre-Translation Toolkit’s “Text Complexity Assessment.” While some technical terms were straightforward, the tool highlighted challenges with clarity, vocabulary, sentence structure, and writing style.
This made sense since the content was for a webpage—it needed to be both persuasive and relatable to the target audience while preserving the cultural essence of a business selling traditional Middle Eastern perfumes and fragrant oils.
Another highly useful feature during the translation review was the "Key Term Translations," which offered multiple English translation options for key terms, ensuring the most accurate and context-appropriate choice.
This feature presented me with multiple English translation options for the Arabic source text. For instance, in the case of "العود," it offered "Oud" and "Agarwood" as possible English equivalents, allowing me to select the most appropriate term based on the context.
Lastly, after translating the content using MachineTranslation.com and making the necessary edits, I evaluated it with Tomedes’ Translation Guidelines Adherence Checker. This tool helped ensure the translation met accuracy standards and adhered to the required guidelines.
You can try out this tool yourself to see how it works. It evaluates both the source text and the translated text, providing a grade based on how effectively the translation aligns with the specified guidelines.
The image below demonstrates a 90% accuracy score, ensuring the translation's quality and providing both me and the client confidence that it meets the standards and guidelines they require.
